The safety initiatives of the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), the National Road Safety Council and the Jamaica Gasolene Retailers Association were further strengthened by donations from Petrojam.

On Thursday, August 22, Petrojam Limited symbolically handed over an aggregate of one million dollars to the organizations in a small ceremony attended by Director General, ODPEM, Mr. Richard Thompson, President, JGRA, Mr. Derrick Thompson, Executive Director, NRSC, Mrs. Paula Fletcher and members of the Petrojam Management Committee.

Speaking at the handing over ceremony held at Petrojam’s Corporate Office, General Manager of Petrojam Limited, Mr. Winston Watson commended ODPEM for their commitment to disaster awareness and preparedness, “I would like to commend the ODPEM for their diligence in realizing the vision of making Jamaica a disaster-resilient nation,” he remarked.

Continuing, Mr. Watson noted that with a projected active Atlantic Hurricane Season, Petrojam is pleased to support ODPEM’s 2013 Public Education campaign ‘Plan for Disasters in Advance, Give yourself a Fighting Chance’ to the tune of $500,000

This donation represents the Company’s contribution to ODPEM’s drive to promote a proactive approach towards disaster preparedness. Adding that it is the belief of the organization that persons should be aware of their responsibility to protect themselves and families from the eventualities of such disasters, the General Manager emphasized the importance of supporting such initiatives.

In keeping with the thrust towards safety, a donation of $350,000 was also made to the National Road Safety Council to assist with their “Below 240” Road Safety Promotion campaign, which aggressively seeks to reduce road fatalities to fewer than 240.

Petrojam commends the NRSC for their success last year in the “Save 300 Lives” Campaign.  Such an achievement reinforces that Public Education efforts are indeed necessary to keep motorists and pedestrians continuously informed of the importance of road safety.

By the same token, The Jamaica Gasoline Retailers Association, were also recipients of a $150,000 donation towards their promotion of national road safety.  The JGRA has for several years supported the NRSC in their drive to reducing automotive related crashes and fatalities.

With the common thread of safety running through the operations of these organizations, it is the hope of Petrojam that these donations have significantly assisted with the respective efforts of promoting the safety and security of all Jamaicans.
